No that's not a Llama, it's an Alpaca...

I am not a Llama, I am an Alpaca!

I am not a Llama, I am an Alpaca!

If you own Alpacas, you have been asked this question numerous times - - Is that a Llama? So many times that you can almost sense when it's going to be asked and have to prepare yourself to answer polietly. When I worked summer jobs in the National Forests out west, we were always asked "When do the deer turn into Elk" or the best "Do you Rangers have to climb the mountain and paint it white in the summer!" (I kid you not).

So, I suppose I was prepared for the envitable Alpaca vs. Llama question. What we weren't prepared for was... "Is that a donkey?", "Is that a camel" - all from adults. Or the cute, "Is that a puppy" from a 3 year old little girl.

For many folks at Interlaken Old Home Days - this was their first opportunity to get up close and touch an Alpaca and feel how soft they are. And it was a great opportunity to educate people about the benefits of Alpaca ownership, why we think Alpacas are better (and we aren't biased at all) and tell them about our farm "Owl Ridge Alpacas".

I'm sure the question will come up again, and we'll repeat our standard answer "No, that's an Alpaca," and just maybe we'll have to post a sign that says all the things Alpacas are not (i.e. Llama, Donkey, Puppy, etc.) but at the end of the day it's all worth it. We had fun and all of the people visiting our booth had a great time and got to experience (many for the first time) a wonderful and beauitful animal!

Storm does it again!

2012 AOBA National Show - 2nd Place!

2012 AOBA National Show - 2nd Place!

To our joy and amazement, "Owl Rige Lightening Storm" took 2nd at the 2012 AOBA National Show - Handcrafters Spinoff Competition! Just received the judges scorecard and ribbon in the mail this afternoon. I still think I'm floating on a cloud. It was on a whim that I even entered, decided at the last minute to give it a try - I'm sure glad that I did.

Judges comments included: "A Beautiful, well nourished fleece with a soft hand. The staple length is not long enough to be recommended for a warp yarn, but the hand is suitable for even a baby's sensitive skin. It would also make a lovel felted garment" Score: 91.5 out of 100!

I'm going to have to get started on gearing up for more spin-offs!

Shearing Day Has Arrived!

Ortiz before...

Ortiz before...

Finally, it's time to shear. I'm amazed at how proud our Alpacas walk into the barn and walk out almost wondering where half their body went. That look quickly disappears when they discover a great dirt hole and finally get to roll and scratch their backs!

This was the second time shearing at Owl Ridge and I have to say it went pretty smooth. Our good friend Phyl came back to help out again (for those of you that go thru shearing it's a true sign of a good friend when they come back again!), and new friends Connie and Ron joined in the fun as well. I still have to wonder why it takes us until the last two alpacas to really get into the swing of things!

I have to give a shout out to Kyle O'Rourke who also came back to shear with us this year (thank goodness). He did another outstanding job, and has a sense of humor that makes the day go by even faster. See ya again next year Kyle!

He can be found at . . . http://www.tuckawayalpacas.com/shearing.html.

Overall it was a great day and a lot of fun. Anytime spent with our herd and our friends makes for a great day - a great nights sleep as well! 365 days until it happens all over again.

"Owl Ridge Storm" takes Second!

We couldn't be more proud!

We couldn't be more proud!

It was an incredible weekend at the Northeast Alpaca Expo in Syracuse, NY. Our 13 year old daughter Cameron showed one of our Alpacas Storm and ended up taking 2nd place. We are of course proud of Storm, but even more so of Cameron. The grin on her face was priceless, and her Dad and I were beaming with pride.

This is the reason we started Owl Ridge Alpacas, we wanted to have a family friendly business that we could all enjoy. The whole point is to have fun, winning was icing on the cake! Congrats Cameron & Storm.
